Spark Challenge Team

Advisor:  TBD

Day | Time:  TBD

Meeting Place:  Room 232

The Spark Challenge team offers our students (who are enrolled in certain GCHS science electives) a unique opportunity to join one of the Northwell departments for a day in the fall semester and learn hands-on about clinical and non-clinical healthcare careers directly from their professionals. After the students’ shadowing visit, they are asked to design a poster that represents one of the careers they learned about. Over the years, students experienced many of the following careers:

  • Clinical Laboratory Specialist
  • Internists/Specialists in Medicine
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Paramedic
  • Pharmacist
  • Telemedicine Physician
  • Physician’s Assistant
  • Clinical Researcher
  • Radiology & Ultrasound Professionals
  • Rehabilitation Professionals
  • And so many more!

During the spring awards ceremony at Crest Hollow Country Club, students give a three-minute presentation to Northwell’s senior executives and answer questions on one career they learned about during their site visit. Students are also able to test out their surgical skills with the da Vinci Xi Surgical System Robot, which is used in Northwell’s operating rooms for minimally invasive surgeries, play with therapy dogs and try their hand in a life-size Operation game.

Over the past years, Glen Cove High School Spark team has won and placed in the competition multiple times, winning prize money that totals $11,500 for the participating students.
